Highlights from both the mindmap and performance editions of Wɔpo, the start of a journey into building bridges across an uncomfortable mixed ancestry of British and Asante. A portmanteau of the vocal-oriented ‘doo-wop’ music and ‘ɔpo’, the Asante word for ‘ocean’, Wɔpo seeks to amplify the voices of ancestors which appear to have been drowned out across the Atlantic passage. Despite a resolve to respond to these calls for ‘Sankofa’, whereby ancestral wisdom becomes a guide for the future, Wɔpo makes light of such problems as ‘double-consciousness’ and the lack of writing systems that document sub-Saharan cultures from the emic viewpoint.

Inspired by Ishmael Reed's 'Mumbo Jumbo' (1972).
